Why Ride a Bike ?

I dont know about you, however I get some criticism from my non-biking friends and work colleges about riding a bike and the risks involved, after all bike traffic consist of 1% of road users, bikes are involved in 19% of all road traffic accidents, and of that 19% ... 60% of those accidents are deemed not to be the fault of the biker. SMIDSy's for example

However 40% of bike accidents are our fault ... We manage to hurt ourselves with alarming regularity and without assistance, and in todays number obsessed society until these figures are altered,  (my guess is the accident rate needs to fall to below 10%) , bikers will be on a hiding to nothing.

This is not helped when individuals fall foul of the law and make headlines .. for example 6 months in prison for doing 122mph with a 14 year old on the back seat, although I suspect that if I did 122mph in my car with my kids in it..  (not that my car would do it) .. I would probably get a lengthy ban, possibly a short prison sentence, but it wouldn't create more than a small paragraph on page 11 of the local paper

These unpleasant statistics include all riders of any age on any 2 wheeled powered vehicle, for experienced older riders the accident rates are considerably less .. certainly less than horse riding and on a par with bicycles

The moral is to have fun but don,t get noticed doing it.

When you come to think about it it's not entirely sensible for somebody aged 40+ to be running round on 2 wheels ... which to me is a major plus point. (Too old to Rock and Roll too young to die - YouTube)

After a pint or 2,  I lined up my thoughts below, For and Against. A lot of the "Against" can be negated by spending money .. for example  No phone - then use a Bluetooth Headset enabled helmet. (But why bother, one of the joys is not being able to answer the phone).

Everybody will have their own answers .. but here's mine.

 Now ....... Whats yours ?

 For Biking Against Biking

1% of Road Users - Being in a minority 19% of accidents
No parking ChargesInjuries .. sometimes severe. life changing and possibly death.
Quicker ... Can FilterExposed to adverse weather conditions
Requires a high level of skill Kitting up / gear, bulky and hot
CameraderieNot sensible for 40 + to be doing
Kitting up1 passenger, no phone, limitted Carrying capacity
 FunCannot use bike performance
Managing the risk aspectRiders percieved as rough biker types
Not the "Sensible" thing to doBikes are generally expensive
1 Passenger. no mobile phoneNeed expensive gear
Can be a cheap way of travellingSubject to a lot of rules and restrictions.
Great hobbyComplexitiy and expense of getting a licence
 Requires good kit / equipment
Risk of severe personal injury or even death when it all goes wrong
 Rideouts / ActivitiesLack of understanding
Common interest groups, clubs for all interests in biking.
Bike easy to steal / Security
Need regular practice to maintain and improve skills.Bike can fall over / prone to expensive damage in minor incidents
Modern Tech - ABS, Traction Control etc makes it safer
Small errors can be critical
Riders Vs BikersNot a "Team" activity
Varied bike sport activitiesIndependant / Solitary activity
Taking part in a historic activity. Can be challenging / dangerous
 Cultural heritageAll riders considered "bikers"
Freedom ... Feel and sensations.Bikes require more maintenance to keep them on the road.
ChallengingLack of practice makes life difficult
Can be a complete lifestylePercieved as having a "death wish"
Independance - Not dependant on others.
Putting gear on takes ages
Clothing / MusicDangerous, minority activity
Bikes use of bus lanesMore exposed to external road conditions, Ice, diesel spills, potholes etc
Technology - GPS, Bluetooth, heated gear.
Can be at the mercy of other road users.(SMIDSY accidents)
Access to high performance vehicles
Increased risk of an accident
 Can park bike anywhere
Easy soft target for legislators.
Access to advanced training easily obtainable .. IAM, Rospa etc.  Bike ideally requires undercover secure storage
Access to Track days Bikes can develop weird electrical problems .. higher level of maintenance skills required.
Laughter at silly accidents eg droping bike outside Tesco.s Bikes "rot" in winter / road salt - same problem with cars fixed years ago
Coming back after injury
Bikers dont always get a fair hearing
Diversity of bikes
Idiots make headlines .. (122mph with a child on the back).
Diversity of bikers
Embarrasing accidents eg Leaving disc lock on
Acceptable mature activity
Pain of old injuries
Mainstream view that bikers are vulnerable road usersView that "scruffy" speed freak bikers dont matter.
Bikers have money and bikers vote
Technical innovation has slowed
Bikers take care of their own / nodding to other riders
Realisation that Bikers have money / become a marketing target.
Actions of a few bikers give everybody a bad name.
